Clutch Release Bearings

A clutch release bearing, also called a throwout bearing, is the part that lets you disengage the clutch. It sits on a guide sleeve around the gearbox input shaft, between the clutch fork (or hydraulic slave cylinder) and the pressure plate.
When you press the clutch pedal, the fork or slave cylinder moves the bearing toward the engine until it meets the fingers of the pressure plate's diaphragm spring. Pressing on those fingers lifts the clamping force off the clutch disc. The gearbox separates from the engine, so you can change gear smoothly. When you release the pedal, the bearing moves back and the diaphragm spring clamps the disc again.

Many heavy trucks reverse this principle: a pull-type release bearing is clipped to the diaphragm spring and draws it back toward the gearbox instead. This job puts the bearing under unusual stress. Every time the clutch is pressed, the bearing carries a heavy axial (thrust) load while spinning at engine speed against the diaphragm fingers. In stop-start city traffic, that can happen hundreds of times a day. That's why clutch release bearings are designed specifically for axial load at high speed, and why most are sealed and greased for life, with no routine maintenance needed.
